There is no single factor that influences trout more than water temperature.


It dictates where trout live, when they feed, how much oxygen they have available, what insects hatch, how aggressively they fight, and ultimately whether they survive after being caught and released. Understanding water temperature isn’t just something that makes you a better fly angler, it makes you a better steward of the resource.


Every summer, especially during years with below-average snowpack and prolonged heat, anglers begin hearing terms like hoot owl restrictions, warm water closures, and 68-degree rule. Unfortunately, these conversations often create confusion. Some anglers assume they shouldn’t fish at all. Others believe trout are perfectly fine because they’re still willing to eat.


The truth lies somewhere in between.


Healthy trout can absolutely be caught during warm summers, but successful anglers learn to adjust when, where, and how they fish to minimize stress on the resource. Understanding the science behind water temperature helps us make better decisions on the river.

Why Cold Water Matters

Trout are cold-water fish. Unlike bass, carp, or catfish, they thrive in cool mountain streams where water temperatures remain relatively stable throughout the year. Their bodies function best in cool, oxygen-rich water.


Everything about a trout’s physiology is tied to temperature:

  • Metabolism

  • Respiration

  • Digestion

  • Immune system

  • Ability to recover from stress

  • Oxygen consumption

  • Growth rate


As water warms, a trout’s metabolism speeds up. That means the fish requires more oxygen simply to stay alive. Unfortunately, warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen.


This creates one of nature’s cruelest paradoxes:


The warmer the water becomes, the more oxygen trout need…while simultaneously having less oxygen available. This relationship explains nearly every behavioral change trout make throughout the summer.


The Sweet Spot: Below 65°F

For most trout fisheries, water temperatures below 65°F represent excellent conditions for both trout and anglers.

Water in the upper 40s through low 60s contains abundant dissolved oxygen, allowing trout to feed aggressively, recover quickly after release, and occupy a wide variety of habitats.


In these temperatures you’ll commonly find trout:

  • Holding in riffles

  • Feeding throughout the day

  • Chasing streamers

  • Rising to dry flies

  • Occupying all parts of the river

  • Moving considerable distances to intercept food


Aquatic insects also thrive under these conditions.

Mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies, midges, and countless other aquatic insects all benefit from cooler, oxygen-rich water. Healthy bug populations create healthy trout populations.


For anglers, this means you can generally practice normal catch-and-release techniques:

  • Fight fish efficiently.

  • Keep fish wet whenever possible.

  • Use barbless hooks.

  • Minimize handling.

  • Release fish quickly.


These simple practices are effective because the trout are physiologically capable of recovering from the stress of being caught.


Why Oxygen Matters So Much

To understand warm-water fishing, it’s important to understand dissolved oxygen. Cold water is naturally capable of holding significantly more oxygen than warm water.


Imagine pouring soda into two glasses. One glass is ice cold. The other is sitting outside on a hot afternoon. The cold soda stays fizzy much longer because cold liquids retain dissolved gases more effectively. (This is why some restaurants serve root beer in an iced mug)


Streams behave similarly. As temperatures rise, oxygen literally escapes the water more easily.

At the same time:

  • Trout breathe faster.

  • Their heart rate increases.

  • Their metabolism accelerates.

  • Recovery after exercise becomes more difficult.


Now imagine hooking a trout. A trout fighting on a fly rod is essentially sprinting. Just like a human running an all-out race, it builds oxygen debt. The difference is that the trout must repay that oxygen debt in water that now contains less oxygen than it needs.


What Happens Between 65° and 67°F?

This is where things begin to change. Many anglers mistakenly assume trout are in immediate danger. once water reaches 65°F. That isn’t necessarily true. Trout are still very catchable. In fact, they often feed aggressively during this window when insect activity is still excellent. However, their margin for recovery begins shrinking. Biologists often refer to this as a stress zone. The fish aren’t dying simply because the thermometer reads 66°F. Instead, multiple stressors begin stacking together.


Their Metabolism Speeds Up

Warmer water acts like turning up the idle speed on an engine. Everything happens faster. Trout digest food more quickly. They burn calories faster. They require more oxygen. Unfortunately, oxygen availability is declining simultaneously.


Trout Begin Changing Where They Live

As water warms, trout don’t randomly swim around looking uncomfortable. They actively seek areas that offer relief.

You’ll often find them:

  • Deep pools

  • Spring-fed side channels

  • Cold tributary mouths

  • Heavily shaded banks

  • Faster riffles with increased oxygen

  • Pocket water with turbulent currents


Fast water isn’t always cooler. But turbulence increases oxygen exchange, making those locations attractive even if temperatures are similar. This explains why many trout seem concentrated in smaller pieces of fast water during hot weather. They’re finding the best combination of oxygen, current, and temperature.


Feeding Windows Shrink

Rather than feeding all day, trout become increasingly selective about when they expend energy.

Expect activity to shift toward:

  • First light

  • Cool mornings

  • Cloudy afternoons

  • Evening caddis hatches (where temperatures allow)

During the hottest portions of the afternoon, many trout simply stop feeding altogether. Energy conservation becomes more important than chasing every drifting insect.


How Anglers Should Adapt at 65° - 67°F

This temperature range demands more thoughtful fishing and fish handling. The fish can still be targeted responsibly, but anglers should make every effort to reduce additional stress. Some best practices include:


Start Early

Water temperatures are often 8–15 degrees cooler at sunrise than late afternoon. Those first few hours frequently provide both the best fishing and the safest conditions.


Land Fish Quickly

Long fights dramatically increase lactic acid buildup and oxygen debt. Use tackle heavy enough to land fish efficiently. Bumping up to 4x or 3x can dramatically reduce fight time.


Fish Barbless

Barbless hooks shorten release time and reduce handling. Plain and simple.


Keep Fish in the Water

Photos are wonderful memories. But in the temperature range, settle for a picture of the fish in the net or a release video while keeping the fish in the water. Whenever possible, release fish without removing them from the water.


Release the Fish in Faster Current

When releasing a fish, avoid reviving in slow calm water. Target faster water where oxygen levels are higher. This will allow the trout to recover faster. With the fish in the net, face your net opening upstream with the fish facing into the current. Allow the fish to recover and swim out on its own.


Carry a Stream Thermometer

Guessing water temperature isn’t enough. A quality stream thermometer should be as standard as nippers or forceps. Mercury thermometers are the most accurate. Once temps reach 65, check temperature every 15-30 minutes to know exactly where temps are.

What Happens at 68°F?

Around 68°F, catch-and-release becomes significantly more risky for trout. This isn’t because 68 degrees is some magical number where every trout suddenly dies. Rather, decades of fisheries research have shown that post-release mortality begins increasing substantially as water temperatures climb into this range, particularly when combined with the stress of being hooked, played, and handled. Think of 68°F as a practical. conservation threshold. Even trout that appear to swim away strongly may experience delayed mortality hours later because they cannot recover from the physiological stress placed on them.


Oxygen Debt Becomes Severe

After fighting on a fly rod, trout accumulate lactic acid in their muscles. They need oxygen to clear that debt. But warm water provides less dissolved. oxygen precisely when they need it most. The fish may look healthy upon release, but internally it’s struggling to regain normal respiratory function.


Recovery Takes Much Longer

Instead of recovering in minutes, some trout may require extended periods to return to normal.

During that time they become more vulnerable to:

  • Predators

  • Disease

  • Fungal infections

  • Additional environmental stress


Even if they survive the initial release, delayed mortality becomes much more likely.


The Immune System Begins to Struggle

Warm water also increases physiological stress that can weaken a trout’s immune response. Minor injuries from hooks or handling become harder to overcome. Bacteria and naturally occurring pathogens that normally pose little threat can become more problematic when trout are already stressed.


Why Responsible Anglers Stop Fishing at 68°F

The goal isn’t simply to catch fish. It’s to ensure those fish are still there next season. When water temperatures reach 68°F, the ethical decision is to reel up and call it a day.


That might mean:

  • Heading home.

  • Fishing a colder fishery.

  • Visiting an alpine lake.

  • Waiting until the following morning.

How to Accurately Measure Water Temperature

Checking the weather app isn’t enough. Neither is relying on river flow or online data. Even neighboring sections of the same river can vary by several degrees depending on shade, tributaries, springs, elevation, and time of day.


For the most accurate reading:

  1. Carry a reliable stream thermometer.

  2. Place it completely underwater where you’re fishing.

  3. Allow it to stabilize for 30–60 seconds.

  4. Measure away from shallow, sun-warmed edges whenever possible.

  5. Continue checking temperatures throughout the day. (Every 30 minutes is a good benchmark)


Many of our guides attach a stream thermometer to a string or old fly line and allow it to hang in the water during fishing trips. This allows for quick temperature checks while on the go.

Remember, rivers often gain several degrees between sunrise and late afternoon. A stretch that begins at 56°F at 6:00am can approach the upper 60s by noon during hot weather.

A warm summer doesn’t signal the end of fly fishing for the season. It simply asks us to become more intentional about how we go about it.


Start before sunrise. Fish the coolest hours of the morning. Pay attention to your thermometer instead of your watch. Handle trout gently, fish barbless, and know when it’s time to reel up.
