As the Roaring Fork leaves Carbondale and flows toward Glenwood Springs, it grows significantly in size and character.  Additional tributaries increase both flow and nutrient levels, creating one of the most productive trout fisheries anywhere in Colorado.  This lower section offers incredible diversity. Long riffles, deep buckets, undercut banks, boulder gardens, and classic runs provide endless habitat for large wild trout.  Many experienced anglers consider this the premier float fishery in western Colorado.

As water temperatures begin to warm before runoff, trout become increasingly active.  Blue Winged Olive hatches, midges, stoneflies, and streamer fishing create outstanding opportunities for anglers chasing large fish before summer arrives.  This is often considered the best fishing of the year anywhere is Colorado.

 

Fall

Autumn transforms the Roaring Fork into one of Colorado's most beautiful rivers.  Golden cottonwoods line the banks, crowds begin to disappear, and cooling water temperatures encourage trout to feed aggressively.  Streamer fishing becomes increasingly productive, while Blue Winged Olives and late-season caddis continue providing excellent dry fly opportunities.
