Is fly fishing safe?

Yes. Guided fly fishing is a safe and enjoyable outdoor activity for anglers of all experience levels. At Colorado River Outfitters, safety is our highest priority. Our experienced guides carefully evaluate river conditions, weather, and each guest's abilities to ensure every trip is both enjoyable and safe.

 

Are your guides trained in river safety?

Absolutely. Our professional guides have extensive experience rowing Colorado's rivers and are trained in river safety, risk management, and emergency procedures. They spend hundreds of days on the water each year and understand how to safely navigate changing river conditions.  Most of our guides are "guide instructors" and teach future float guides river safety and water rescue.

 

Do I have to wear a life jacket?

Yes. Personal flotation devices (PFDs) are provided and required on all float trips. We use high-quality, properly fitted life jackets and ensure every guest is comfortable before launching.

 

What if I've never been in a drift boat before?

That's completely normal. Many of our guests are experiencing a drift boat or raft for the first time. Before launching, your guide will explain boat safety, where to sit, how to enter and exit the boat, and what to expect throughout the day.  He will also cover everything you will need to know to stay safe in the boat and what to do in the rare event that you go overboard.

 

Are children safe on guided fishing trips?

Absolutely. Family trips are one of our specialties. We take extra care to ensure children are comfortable, properly fitted with life jackets, and introduced to fly fishing in a safe and enjoyable environment. Our guides adjust the pace of the trip based on each child's age and experience.

 

What happens if the weather changes?

Colorado weather can change quickly, especially in the mountains. Our guides closely monitor forecasts and conditions throughout the day. If severe weather develops, we'll make adjustments or end the trip early if necessary to ensure everyone's safety.  

 

Do you guide during thunderstorms?

No. Lightning is one of the few conditions that may require us to temporarily pause or end a trip. If thunderstorms create unsafe conditions, your guide will make the appropriate decision to protect everyone on the water.

 

What if river conditions become unsafe?

Our guides monitor river flows, water temperatures, weather, and other changing conditions every day. If water levels or river conditions become unsafe, we'll recommend an alternative river, adjust the trip, postpone the outing, or reschedule when appropriate.

 

Do I need to know how to swim?

While swimming ability is always beneficial, it isn't required for most guided float trips. Every guest is provided with a properly fitted life jacket when appropriate, and our guides prioritize safety throughout the day.

 

Is fly fishing physically demanding?

Most guided trips are suitable for guests with average mobility and fitness. Whether you're fishing from a drift boat or walking along the river, we'll recommend the best trip based on your comfort level, experience, and physical abilities.

 

What should I wear for a safe and comfortable trip?

We recommend dressing in layers, wearing polarized sunglasses, applying sunscreen, and bringing a rain jacket. Proper clothing helps protect you from changing weather, sun exposure, and cool morning temperatures.

 

Are hooks dangerous?

Like any outdoor activity involving fishing equipment, fly hooks should always be handled carefully. Our guides provide instruction on safe casting techniques, hook handling, and fish landing to minimize risk and ensure everyone enjoys a safe day on the water.

 

What if someone gets injured?

While injuries are rare, our guides carry first aid supplies, are first aid certified and are prepared to respond to minor injuries. If a more serious medical situation arises, your guide will follow established emergency procedures and contact emergency services if necessary.

 

Is drinking alcohol allowed during the trip?

Guests who are 21 years of age or older are welcome to bring beer or other alcoholic beverages to enjoy responsibly. We ask that alcohol be consumed in moderation and never interfere with the safety of the trip or your guide's instructions. Our priority is ensuring everyone has a safe, enjoyable experience.

 

Do your guides prioritize fish safety too?

Absolutely. At Colorado River Outfitters, we believe responsible angling goes hand in hand with conservation. Our guides teach proper catch-and-release techniques, minimize fish handling, use rubber landing nets, and encourage best practices that help protect Colorado's wild trout fisheries for future generations.

 

What can I do to help keep the trip safe?
