Frequently Asked Questions - Family Trips

family fly fishing trips colorado

Is fly fishing a good activity for families?

Absolutely! Family fly fishing trips are one of our favorite experiences. Spending a day on the river allows families to unplug, enjoy Colorado's beautiful scenery, and create lasting memories together. Whether you're staying in Vail, Beaver Creek, Glenwood Springs, or Aspen, a guided fishing trip is a fun outdoor adventure that everyone can enjoy.

Do kids need fly fishing experience?

Not at all. Many of the children we guide are holding a fly rod for the very first time. Our patient, experienced guides teach the basics in a fun and encouraging way, helping young anglers build confidence while keeping the day enjoyable and stress-free.

What is the best age for kids to start fly fishing?

Every child is different, but we generally recommend ages 7 and older. Our guides adjust the pace of the trip to match each child's age, attention span, and experience level to ensure everyone has a great time.

Are your guides experienced working with children?

Yes. Our guides spend countless days each season introducing kids and families to fly fishing. They understand how to keep children engaged, celebrate every success, and create a positive experience that often turns into lifelong family memories.

Will my child actually catch fish?

While no guide can guarantee fish, our family trips are designed to maximize opportunities for action and success. We often choose rivers and techniques that provide plenty of chances for young anglers to hook and land trout while learning new skills.

Is fly fishing safe for children?

Safety is our highest priority. Our professional guides provide instruction throughout the day, select appropriate water for your family's experience level, and ensure everyone understands safe practices while fishing and floating.  Our guides are safety professionals that will cater each trip with safety as the top priority.

Do you provide equipment for kids?

Yes. We provide high-quality fly rods, reels, waders, boots, and flies for anglers of nearly all ages and sizes. Our guides make sure every piece of equipment is properly fitted before the trip begins.  We have a full I inventory of youth size waders and boots so your child will be dry and comfortable throughout the trip.

Should we choose a half-day or full-day family trip?

For families with younger children or first-time anglers, a half-day trip is often the perfect introduction to fly fishing. Families with older kids who enjoy spending time outdoors frequently choose a 3/4 day or full-day trip to experience more water, more fishing, and a relaxed pace.

Can parents fish too?

Absolutely! Family trips are designed so everyone can participate. Whether Mom and Dad are experienced anglers or complete beginners, our guides help each member of the family enjoy their day on the river.

What wildlife might we see during our trip?

Colorado's rivers are full of incredible wildlife. It's common to see bald eagles, osprey, mule deer, elk, river otters, beavers, bighorn sheep, and even black bears from the safety of the boat. Many families tell us the wildlife viewing is just as memorable as the fishing.

What should my family bring?

We recommend comfortable layered clothing, sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, reusable water bottles, cameras, and a sense of adventure. We'll provide a detailed packing list before your trip so everyone arrives prepared.

What if someone in our family doesn't want to fish?

No problem. Many family members simply enjoy floating or wading down the river, taking photos, watching wildlife, and relaxing in Colorado's beautiful mountain scenery. Every trip can be customized to match your family's interests.

Why is a guided family fishing trip better than fishing on your own?

Our guides handle all of the planning, equipment, rowing, fly selection, and instruction so your family can simply enjoy spending time together. Instead of worrying about where to fish or what flies to use, you can focus on making memories while our experienced guides take care of everything else.

Can you accommodate large family groups?

Yes. Whether you're celebrating a family reunion, birthday, vacation, or multi-generational gathering, we can provide multiple boats and professional guides so everyone can enjoy the experience together while staying close throughout the day.
