Do I need to bring my own fly fishing equipment?

No. Colorado River Outfitters provides nearly everything you'll need for a successful day on the water. Our professional guides supply premium fly rods, reels, flies, leaders, tippet, and all terminal tackle. If you own equipment you'd like to use, you're welcome to bring it, but most guests simply fish with ours.

 

What equipment is included with my guided trip?

Every guided fly fishing trip includes high-quality fly rods, reels, flies, leaders, tippet, indicators, split shot, nets, and all other terminal tackle. Waders and wading boots are also available whenever conditions require them.

 

What type of fly rods do you use?

Our guides provide modern fly rods selected specifically for Colorado's rivers and trout fisheries. Each setup is matched to the conditions and techniques you'll be using, helping anglers of all experience levels fish comfortably and effectively.  Most of our guides fish with 5 weight or 6 weight fly rods.

 

Do you provide waders and boots?

Yes. We offer clean, well-maintained waders and wading boots in a wide range of sizes, including youth sizes. Our guides ensure everything fits properly before your trip begins so you can stay comfortable throughout the day.

 

Do I need to bring flies?

No. Our guides provide a carefully selected assortment of flies based on current river conditions, insect hatches, water temperatures, and trout behavior. We constantly update our fly selection to match what the fish are actively feeding on.  We NEVER charge for flies.

 

Can I use my own fly fishing gear?

Absolutely. If you have favorite rods, reels, or flies you'd like to fish with, feel free to bring them. Our guides are happy to help rig your equipment and recommend any adjustments that may improve your success.

 

What if I've never used fly fishing equipment before?

That's exactly what we're here for. Our guides will explain how every piece of equipment works, help you become comfortable with your setup, and teach you the fundamentals of fly casting, line management, and fish fighting throughout the day.

 

Do I need polarized sunglasses?

We highly recommend them but they are not required. Polarized sunglasses reduce glare, help you see fish and underwater structure, protect your eyes from stray hooks, and make your day on the river more enjoyable. If you have polarized sunglasses, be sure to bring them.

 

What clothing should I wear?

Dress in comfortable layers that can adapt to changing mountain weather. Moisture-wicking clothing, a light jacket, rain gear, a hat, and comfortable outdoor clothing are all excellent choices. Avoid cotton whenever possible, especially during cooler weather.  For wade trips where you'll be wearing waders, light pants with warm socks are usually best year around.  Ask your guide for their recommendations based on weather forecast.

 

What shoes should I wear?

If you're floating, comfortable athletic shoes, flip flops or sandals are usually perfect. For walk-and-wade trips, we'll provide properly fitted waders and wading boots when needed. Your guide will let you know what footwear is best for your specific trip.

 

Should I bring a rain jacket?

Yes. Afternoon showers are common in Colorado's mountains, especially during the summer. A lightweight waterproof jacket helps keep you comfortable and prepared for changing weather.

 

Can I bring a camera or phone?

Absolutely. We encourage guests to capture memories throughout the day. Your guide will take lot of photos of you fishing, holding your catch and wildlife.  A waterproof bag to keep all of your belongings/phone/camera dry is recommended.  Your guide will have dry storage on the boat.

 

Can I bring food and drinks?

Yes. Full-day trips include lunch, and you're welcome to bring your favorite snacks or beverages. We also recommend bringing a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated, especially during the summer months.  Your guide will have an assortment of non-alcoholic beverages including water and gatorade.

Can I bring beer or alcohol?

Yes. Guests who are 21 years of age or older are welcome to bring beer or other alcoholic beverages to enjoy responsibly during their guided fly fishing trip. We simply ask that alcohol be consumed in moderation and never interfere with the safety of the trip, your guide's instructions, or your ability to fish and enjoy the day. Our top priorities are providing a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience for everyone on the water.

 

What if I forget something?

Don't worry. Our guides carry extra gear and many commonly needed items. If you're unsure what to bring, we'll provide a complete packing list before your trip and are happy to answer any questions beforehand.

 

Is your equipment suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. Our equipment is selected to be reliable, easy to use, and appropriate for anglers of all skill levels. Whether you're casting a fly rod for the very first time or you've been fishing for decades, we'll make sure you're equipped for success.

 

Do you provide equipment for children?

Yes. We have fly fishing equipment suitable for younger anglers, including appropriately sized rods, waders, and boots. Our guides make sure every child is comfortable and equipped with gear that matches their size and experience level.

 

Is your equipment well maintained?

Yes. Our guides inspect, clean, and maintain equipment throughout the season to ensure everything performs reliably on the water. We take pride in providing quality gear that allows our guests to focus on enjoying their fishing experience.
