Beautiful Wild Trout
The Upper Eagle supports healthy populations of naturally reproducing wild brown trout, cut bow trout and rainbow trout. Most fish range from 12 to 18 inches, with larger trout regularly exceeding 20 inches for anglers who put in the time. These fish are beautifully colored, incredibly strong, and thrive in the cold, oxygen-rich water flowing through the Vail Valley.

As the Eagle River leaves the Vail Valley, it begins to grow in size and diversity. From Edwards through Wolcott and into the town of Eagle, the river develops longer riffles, deeper runs, sweeping bends, and productive gravel bars that create exceptional trout habitat. This section combines beautiful scenery with outstanding summer fishing and is one of our favorite stretches for guided float trips.
Float Fishing at Its Best
The Middle Eagle is ideally suited for float fishing trips. Floating allows anglers to efficiently cover miles of productive water while accessing runs that simply can't be reached from shore. Every bend reveals another productive bank, riffle, or deep bucket holding hungry trout. This section offers a relaxing day on the water while providing opportunities to catch impressive numbers of fish.

The Middle Eagle is known for its excellent population of wild trout. As it approaches its confluence with the Colorado River near Dotsero, the Eagle becomes larger, slower in places, and home to some of the biggest trout in the entire drainage. Trophy Trout
The Lower Eagle has earned a reputation among local guides for producing exceptional trophy trout. While fish of all sizes are present, this section consistently gives anglers opportunities to hook trout measuring well over 18 inches. Early Spring
As snow begins to melt in the surrounding mountains and water temperatures slowly rise, trout become increasingly active after winter. Fall
Autumn is one of our favorite times to fish the Lower Eagle. Cool water temperatures, lighter fishing pressure, changing cottonwood leaves, and aggressive pre-spawn brown trout combine to create exceptional fishing conditions.
